About Us

We Love Canoeing

Outrigger canoeing is a unique sport for everyone, young and old, men and women, the entire family. It requires nothing more than a canoe and a paddle. No engines please. The outrigger provides stability to the canoe. This adds a measure of safety to excursions and allows paddlers to catch a wave. It can be a demanding sport for competing teams or individuals or a pleasant way to spend time on the water. But it is always a fun and exciting activity. And you’ll see Maui from a different perspective.

Hawaiian Canoe Club

Founded in 1960, as a haven for Hawaiian kids after school, Hawaiian Canoe Club has always focused on families. Especially on the betterment of youth through healthy living, physical exercise, community service, and instruction on Hawaiian culture and values.

Through it’s association with the Kamali’i program, dedicated to preservation of Hawaiian culture and values, Hawaiian Canoe Club is a registered non-profit charity organization. All proceeds from canoe rides go to the club.

Kamali’i Program

Every summer,  Kamali’i kids, between the ages of ten and 18 years, paddle to Kahoolawe Island to plant trees in an effort to restore the island. They clean and clear the beach and club house (hale), learn hula, recite chants, plant taro, cook using an imu, and paddle. Many Kamali’i kids grow up to become adult paddlers. Some of our members are third generations paddlers.

Champions

Our club also strives to achieve excellence in performance, focusing on paddling technique and teamwork. During the past nineteen years, the Hawaiian Canoe Club has won the Hawaiian state championship sixteen times. We have been able to enter all categories, men and women, boys and girls, and in all age groups.

Hawaiian Canoe Club competes in international canoe races as well. Every two years we travel to venues such as Tahiti, New Zealand, Australia, Brazil, and Canada for World Sprints.

Our mission:

Perpetuate and preserve the art of Hawaiian canoe paddling by providing an environment rooted in traditional Hawaiian values that promote personal growth, character development, and achievement in physical fitness.
